What Is the UUID Generator?
The UUID Generator creates identifiers in the familiar version 4 UUID layout: hexadecimal groups separated by hyphens. A uuid v4 generator is handy when test records, example API requests, or mock objects need realistic-looking identifiers without a meaningful sequence. One identifier is already displayed when the tool opens, so you can copy a sample immediately.
The identifiers follow the version 4 layout, but the randomness is not cryptographically secure. The tool is useful for examples and non-security-sensitive development work, but it should not generate authentication tokens, password-reset links, or other secrets.
How to Use the UUID Generator
- Copy the initial UUID using the copy control beside that row if you only need one sample.
- Select Generate 1 to add a new identifier at the top of the list. Existing entries remain below it.
- Select Generate 10 to add ten fresh entries before the identifiers already shown. This adds a batch rather than replacing the list.
- Select Clear to empty the displayed list. You can then generate another single identifier or batch.
Each row has its own copy control. There is no bulk-copy button, downloadable list, custom batch-size field, or version selector. The output stays in lowercase hexadecimal with the standard hyphenated grouping. Generation actions are connected to the site ad bridge, so they may pass through that flow before the list updates.
Practical Examples and Real-World Uses
- API documentation: insert a realistic identifier into an example request body instead of using an ambiguous placeholder such as ID_GOES_HERE.
- Mock databases: create a handful of sample customer or order references for a local demonstration without implying that the values are production credentials.
- Frontend prototypes: populate static fixtures that need distinct record identifiers during layout and interaction testing.
- Test explanations: show students the fixed version position and the overall grouping of a version 4 UUID.
Generating ten at once is convenient for a small fixture set. Because each result is copied separately, this is not a substitute for a bulk fixture generator when you need thousands of records. The tool also does not check an existing database or registry to ensure that a generated value is unused.
Best Practices and Important Limits
- Treat these values as identifiers, not secrets. Random-looking text is not automatically suitable for an access credential.
- Use a cryptographically secure UUID tool in production systems that depend on strong randomness. Use this generator for samples rather than secrets.
- Keep database uniqueness constraints. No manual identifier tool removes the need to handle collisions or duplicate imports in an application.
- Copy the entire value, including all hyphens. Truncating an identifier changes both its format and its collision characteristics.
- Record which values belong to which fixtures before clearing the page. Clear removes the visible list and is not an archive operation.
If you need time-ordered identifiers, a different UUID version, uppercase formatting, or a custom namespace, choose a tool designed for those requirements. This interface deliberately offers only a small set of generation actions.
Useful for
- Mock record identifiers
- Example API payloads
- Small test fixture sets
- UUID format demonstrations
Who should use it
- API documentation writers
- Frontend developers
- QA engineers
- Programming students
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using UUIDs as security tokens
- Assuming collisions are impossible
- Expecting other UUID versions
- Clearing before saving needed values
When not to use it
- For cryptographic secrets
- For large bulk exports or time-ordered UUIDs
Frequently asked questions
Which UUID version does it generate?
It produces version 4-shaped UUIDs with the corresponding version and variant positions.
Is it suitable for secret tokens?
No. It uses Math.random, which is not cryptographically secure.
Can I generate several UUIDs?
Yes. Generate 10 adds ten entries, while Generate 1 adds a single entry.
Can I copy the whole list at once?
There is no bulk-copy control. Each displayed UUID has its own copy control.
