What Is the Text Shadow Generator?

The Text Shadow Generator lets you design one CSS text shadow using a live preview and a small set of controls. You can change the horizontal offset, vertical offset, blur, opacity, and shadow color, then copy the resulting declaration. It is useful when you want to see how a shadow changes letter edges before editing values by hand.

A text shadow follows the shape of the characters, unlike a box shadow around an element's rectangular area. The preview uses the fixed words Preview Text in a large, bold style. The generator creates a single shadow layer, not a stack of shadows, an outline system, or a complete typography style.

How to Use the Text Shadow Generator?

Move X Offset to position the shadow horizontally, from -20 to 20px. Negative values move it left and positive values move it right. Move Y Offset across the same range to position it vertically; positive values move down and negative values move up. Both start at 2px and change in whole-pixel steps.

Set Blur between 0 and 30px, beginning at 4px. Adjust Opacity from 0 to 100% in steps of 5%, and select the shadow tint with Color. The default is black at 30% opacity. Watch Preview Text and read the CSS panel as you adjust the controls. Use the copy control to copy the text-shadow declaration, then paste it into a CSS rule for your own text.

Practical Examples and Use Cases

  • For a large heading, try a restrained offset and low opacity to explore subtle depth. Verify the effect with the actual font, since narrow and heavy letterforms respond differently.
  • For a decorative label, compare zero blur with a small offset to create a sharper displaced shadow. This makes the direction of the effect especially clear.
  • For a soft glow experiment, choose a colored shadow, reduce both offsets toward zero, and increase blur. The tool still creates only one layer, so complex neon effects require additional CSS work.

These are starting points rather than presets. The interface does not offer editable sample text, a font selector, or a preview-background picker. Copy the declaration into your actual design to judge how it behaves at your intended size and against the real background.

Best Practices and Tips

  1. Keep the text readable without relying on a shadow as the only source of separation. A shadow can help visually, but it is not an automatic contrast check or an accessibility guarantee.
  2. Change one control at a time when learning the effect. Offset determines direction, blur controls softness, and opacity changes intensity. Mixing all three at once makes comparisons harder.
  3. Test small text separately from headings. A pleasing effect on the large preview can make small letters look muddy or crowded.
  4. Remember what is copied. The output includes text-shadow only, with an rgba color; it does not include font size, text color, font family, or a selector.
  5. Use the Box Shadow Generator instead when you want a shadow around a card or container rather than around characters. Text and box shadows solve different styling problems even when their controls look similar.

Useful for

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a large shadow on small text
  • Confusing text-shadow with box-shadow
  • Expecting the copied CSS to include typography styles
  • Treating a shadow as a contrast guarantee

When not to use it

  • When you need layered shadow editing
  • When you need a shadow around an element box

Frequently asked questions

Can this generate multiple text-shadow layers?

No. It outputs one shadow layer. Add comma-separated layers manually if you need a more complex CSS effect.

How do negative shadow offsets work?

A negative X Offset moves the shadow left. A negative Y Offset moves it upward.

Can I change the preview text or font?

No. The preview text and its font styling are fixed in this tool. Test the copied declaration with your own content separately.

Is CSS text-shadow supported in modern browsers?

Yes. Text-shadow is widely supported in modern browsers. You should still verify readability and appearance in your target environments.
